PowerFin developed and commissioned a 2.6 MWac (3.1 MWdc) community solar project in 2018. The project is located in the Springdale neighborhood, approximately three miles east of downtown Austin on land owned by Austin Energy, the local municipal utility. Energy from the solar project feeds into batteries located immediately adjacent to the solar installation at the Kingsbery substation, which is owned and operated by Austin Energy.
Energy from the facility is purchased by Austin Energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement. Retail customers of Austin Energy then have the option to purchase that energy at a long-term 15-year fixed rate of 4.27¢/kWh (2.77¢/kWh for those who qualify under the Community Assistance Program). Customers who subscribe to Austin Energy's community solar program are able to stabilize their long-term energy costs against inflation but will pay a slight premium to Austin Energy's current Power Supply Adjustment (PSA) charge of 3.078¢/kWh (those who qualify under CAP will pay a slight discount to the PSA charge).
