PowerFin, along with the municipal utility in San Antonio (CPS Energy), pioneered the first-of-its-kind free rooftop solar program in 2015. A total of approximately 600 residential and commercial customers have been able to benefit from the program. In exchange for allowing PowerFin to install solar on their roof, a typical participating customer can save approximately 20-30% on their monthly electricity bill. Because there is no cost to customers, anyone can participate. The program has been quite popular, with demand exceeding capacity and with no existing hosts requesting any removals to date.
A total of 5.0 MWac (6.0 MWdc) were developed and commissioned throughout the broader San Antonio metropolitan area in 2016 and 2017. Each solar installation is "in front of the meter" or interconnected on distribution lines owned and operated by CPS Energy, who is also the off-taker of power under a 20-year power purchase agreement. Throughout the life of the contract, PowerFin maintains the solar systems while providing a warranty not to damage the roof. At the end of the term, PowerFin will remove the solar installations and return the roofs to their original condition.
